New cycle routes in Bradley Stoke coming soon

If you go down to the Willow Brook Centre in Bradley Stoke you may have noticed that South Gloucestershire Council has started work on new cycle routes.

Bradley Stoke already has its fair share of cyclists, using the existing cycle routes to get to their destinations or to get out into the many green spaces that lurk between the residential areas. The new routes 3 and 4 are funded by the Cycling City project and should encourage more people to get out on their bikes.

Route 3: Bradley Stoke leisure centre to Parkway Station

Cyclists will be able to travel safely and quickly from Bradley Stoke leisure centre to Parkway Station connecting the local schools and residents to facilities, including the Willow Brook Centre.

Route 4: Mall at Cribbs Causeway to Bradley Stoke

The route will link up existing pathways and use quiet roads and will take cyclists through a nature reserve at Gorse Covert and Patchway Common.

Both of these routes will result in a more pleasant journey for leisure rides, school pupils and commuters. The routes will connect the green spaces to all major facilities such as libraries, schools and shopping centres as well as local BMX parks.

A clearer signing system will be put in place and cycle symbols will also be used along the routes to ensure that no one gets lost.
New cycle parking is being installed so that once cyclists reach your destination; you can park your bike safely and continue with your day.

Once these routes are completed, cyclists will benefit from safe access to the many entry points into Savage’s Wood, a nature reserve with many pleasant paths used by pedestrians and cyclists that connect the local facilities.

Both of these projects are part of Greater Bristol’s Cycling City project, which is bringing you safer ways to cycle around Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
For more information, to have a look at maps of the routes or find out more about the Cycling City project visit www.betterbybike.info.

A Moving Service of Love and Memory for Ryan Abrahams

Friends, relatives and well-wishers said goodbye to popular teenager Ryan John Abrahams on Monday 8th March, admist a sea of bright colours, particularly red - in recogition of Ryan's support of both Manchester United and Bristol City football clubs.

There was standing room only at Westerleigh Crematorium, with moving speeches, poems and readings by Ryan's family and friends.

Donations in memory of Ryan were made to Children's Hospice South West and The Jessie May Trust.

After the service, friends joined Ryan's family at Bristol City Football Club, where everyone made a toast to Ryan with his favourite drink, Coca Cola. A song, specially-recorded by three of Ryan's friends, was played in celebration of Ryan's wonderful 14 years of life.

Our thoughts are with Ryan's Mum and Dad, and with his brother Warren.

Tributes to Year 9 BSCS Student Ryan Abrahams

Fellow students have been paying tribute to popular, cheeky teenager Ryan Abrahams, who was an outgoing and sporty lad, despite relying on a motorized wheelchair for his independence.

Born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a muscle-wasting condition, Ryan nevertheless lived life to the full - a keen sportsman, a great fan of his Playstation, R&B music and who loved racing his remote controlled car.

Ryan's parents, Mark and Mary, would drive him to Birmingham every Friday evening for special football training sessions at Villa Park. He earnt the 'Player of the Year' Trophy for 2007/08 and was also selected to represent South Gloucestershire in the table top cricket championships.

One Bradley Stoke Community School student described Ryan's parents, Mark and Mary, as Ryan's 'legs' - through their commitment and dedication Ryan was able to lead a truly fulfilling and rewarding life.

The school held a special assembly in Ryan's memory, and students have placed flowers, teddy bears, written tributes and moving poems alongside Ryan's reserved parking space at the school.

Head Teacher Talks of Happy Memories of Ryan

Teachers ar BSCS are encouraging students to focus on happy memories of Year 9 Student Ryan Abrahams, who sadly died on Tuesday evening.

Head Teacher, Dave Baker, said "It would be easy to focus on death and negativity at a time like this but communities such as our school are defined by the way we respond in times of difficulty and challenge. We are encouraging the students to focus on the positives of Ryan’s life and remember all the good things that he was involved in and the happy memories that they have of him."

To give Ryan's friends the chance to express their emotions, the school made a room available for students to drop in on Thursday when they felt they were unable to cope with the grief they were feeling or if they just felt the need for reflection for a short while; they also put a board in the room for students to write happy memories of Ryan.

Dave Baker continued:"Ryan was a great example of one of our school’s 4Rs as he showed resilience and a fighting spirit despite the challenges of being in a wheelchair with all the frustrations and limitations that gave him. He will be remembered as a happy and friendly member of our school and wider community where he was involved in so many different things, especially sport and football in particular.

"Staff and students alike have been remembering Ryan as a happy boy who was so full of life, along with a rather cheeky sense of humour! He will be missed by us all."

A Medley of Musical Offerings from the Thornbury Carnival

David Goldring, Thornbury Carnival Association Chairman, says
“This year’s Carnival is set to provide a musical spectacular for the folk of Thornbury and the surrounding areas.”

Amidst fierce competition from other events around the country, TCA chairman David Goldring has, so far, secured no less than eleven musical groups to entertain the crowds on both the parade route and Carnival Field.

Heading the Parade will be one of the country’s leading military bands, the Central Band of the RAF. Its thirty nine members will be familiar to many from their concert in Olveston Church last year and Thornbury Carnival is thrilled to introduce them to audience members who missed their prior performance.

We will also be joined by the Westbury ATC Drum Corps and the Corps of Drums from the Gloucestershire ACF, as the Cadet movement celebrates ‘Cadet 150’ throughout 2010, marking the 150th anniversary of the cadet movement.

There will be an additional stage on the Carnival Field this year to accommodate the increase in musical attractions. Although the stages will not be programmed exclusively for music, some of the on-stage highlights will include Thornbury’s full Orchestra, conducted by Chris Hill and the Thornbury Castle Band under the baton of new Director of Music, Geraint Barnes.

Adding a different musical flavour will be a Caribbean Melody Steel Band from Birmingham, who have already secured a future booking for a local wedding through their involvement in the Carnival.

Familiar faces from the Carnival in 2009 include the Nailsworth Silver Band and Irish folk group ‘Mo, Mac ‘n’ Me’. They will be joined in the line-up by new faces including the Concorde Saxophone Quartet, City of Bristol Pipes and Drums.

Finally, Castle School will have a major presence on the day, with many of its young musicians performing in their Salsa Band, Steel Band and Gospel Choir.

There is still scope for buskers and small groups of entertainers to perform in the Town before the Parade passes through. Submissions are invited from any party who may be suitable, so please visit the Carnival blog www.thornburycarnival.wordpress.com and make contact via the site.

The event is on Saturday 3rd July.

"Calling the police immediately was exactly the right thing to do"

Two men were arrested minutes after a burglary in Stoke Gifford on Monday February 15 2010.

South Gloucestershire police were called just after 7.30pm by a householder who had disturbed a man in his home and seen him make off in a waiting car.

Specialist road policing officers and the force helicopter were called in to help trace the vehicle, which was found crashed in Ashley Down Road soon afterwards.

By 8pm two men had been arrested nearby.

The car was found to have been stolen on Sunday February 14 2010 and police also discovered a suspected stolen laptop in the vehicle.

Neighbourhood Inspector Bob Evely said: "Calling the police immediately was exactly the right thing to do. South Gloucestershire is a safe place to live and work, but no one should be complacent about crime.

"Make sure you keep your property secure and look out for your neighbours. There's lots of information on deterring thieves on our website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk."

Key advice includes:
• Lock up and set the alarm in the evening as well as when you go out • Post code your valuables and register them for free at www.immobilise.com – it could help convict a burglar and return your property • Keep your keys and handbag or wallet hidden safely out of sight • Join or set up Neighbourhood Watch • Make sure ladders and tools are secured otherwise a thief could use them to break into your home.

Crime does not pay: court orders confiscation of drug dealer's assets in Stoke Gifford

Assets worth almost £35,000 are to be seized from a Stoke Gifford man convicted of drug dealing.

In August 2009 the man admitted supplying cocaine and cannabis and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. On Friday 5 February Bristol Crown Court ordered the confiscation of his realisable assets – £15,758 in cash seized from his home and two vehicles with a total value of £34,758.

The order follows an investigation by the Avon and Somerset Constabulary Financial Investigation Unit (FIU) which showed that the man had benefited from crime to the amount of £123,932.

Dr Kirstie Cogram, who manages the FIU, said: "This confiscation order demonstrates the ongoing commitment of Avon and Somerset Constabulary to dismantling criminal networks and seizing their assets.

"This order should send a clear warning to criminals that crime does not pay and any benefits they have gained from their criminal activity will be stripped away."

This is the 111th confiscation order obtained by Avon and Somerset Constabulary this financial year (2009-10).

Last year, assets worth more than £2.5 million were seized in 133 cases. A further £5.6 million is cash and assets have been frozen pending the outcome of current court cases.

The money seized goes to central government, the police, CPS and the courts. Through the new Community Payback scheme launched last May, some of the money is also returned to local communities.

Pupils at Meadowbrook Primary School in Bradley Stoke have been showcasing their talent this week, in two separate performances.

Year 5's put on a vibrant and energy-packed Hip Hop show for parents, which was the culmination of a learning arc based around the idea of 'Hip Hop You Don't Stop'.

Also this week, years 3 and 4 are performing in their 'Meadowbrook's Got Talent' show, which showcases a wide range of talents amongst the pupils.

Bailey’s Court Cookery Club Wins Big Lottery Fund Grant

Bailey’s Court Primary School is delighted to announce the success of our grant application to the Big Lottery Fund “Awards For All” scheme for our exciting new Cookery Club Project.

Our pupils and parents have told us, through questionnaires and commentary in cooking lessons, that they would like to do more cooking in school. They are especially keen to use our “home grown” produce, eg fruit and vegetables from our gardening club and fresh eggs from our chickens. We wanted to be able to purchase new equipment to provide a modern kitchen facility consisting of two well equipped teaching areas and a demonstration area. This will be used to teach both our pupils and extended members of the community to cook fresh, healthy food in a safe environment and promote our “healthy schools” status. Our Big Lottery Fund grant of £9,525 will now enable us to achieve this.
The kitchen is going to be fitted and equipped in the February half term and will mean that we can teach our pupils about the importance of hygiene, how to prepare healthy, nutritious food and promote a healthy lifestyle. We would like this to take place in such a way that our pupils look upon cooking as a fun and interesting experience that they want to be involved in, rather than a necessity to survive. We intend to offer both lunchtime and after school cookery clubs to all our pupils. We would also like to extend these cookery club sessions to the wider community where pupils could cook alongside their parents/guardians to enable them to experience the enjoyment of cooking healthy meals together, hopefully resulting in this cooking experience continuing more frequently at home in their everyday lives.

In the long term we intend to offer the wider community the chance to use our facilities alongside our pupils, eg pensioners, brownies and guides, cubs and scouts etc.

We plan to celebrate our Big Lottery Fund grant and hold a grand opening ceremony on Monday,
15 March 2010 at 2.30pm. Our pupils and staff would love to invite you to join us to help celebrate such an exciting event and sample some of our freshly baked produce.

If you would like to come, please contact our Office Manager, Denise Hickson, by email to denise.hickson@southglos.gov.uk or by calling 01454 866666.

South Gloucestershire Trading Standards warns of Advertising scams

Notice by South Gloucestershire Trading Standards:

Each year South Gloucestershire Council's Trading Standards receives a high number of enquiries and complaints from traders within the district about advertising scams they have either fallen victim of or require advice on how to deal with.

Traders either receive a phone call or a letter implying that they have agreed to advertising in a booklet or wall planner some months beforehand and now the advertisers are seeking payment. They are relying on you not remembering whether you have or have not agreed to the contract and you taking their word for it! Many claim to be working is association with the emergency services or a good cause – this is not the case. Many also threatened court action if the trader refuses to settle the invoice and some traders may even receive letters from debt collection agencies.

If you have not nor have any recollection of agreeing to an advertising contract, question the caller and ask for proof or put these points in a letter. Without any proof that you agreed to the contract, the advertisers will not be able to claim the monies from you in court. If the advertisers state they have a telephone recording – ask for a copy and a transcript. Many traders find the quality is poor and they have been doctored – if this is the case, then the advertisers may find enforcing the claim difficult.

Some traders have found that the advertisers stop pursuing them when confronted. Others have found that they need to stand their ground after being sent further threatening letters. Remember that without any proof you agreed to the contract, the advertisers will not be able to enforce the claim!

PLEASE NOTE – if you have agreed to an advertising contract, you have no automatic cooling off period and may find yourself liable for the costs.

For further advice contact Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06
