A new future for the Reserve Forces
July 3rd, 2013
The Filton and Bradley Stoke MP, Jack Lopresti has today welcomed the Government s plans for the future of the UK Reserve Forces. The plans were announced today by the Secretary of State for Defence, the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, with details in a White Paper.
The White Paper re-iterates the Government s commitment to the Reserves as part of a £1.8 Billion investment, over 10 years, into better kit and training as well as a re-structuring programme. The measures include a £200 million investment for the Army Reserve, including a £40 million investment into new dismounted close combat equipment such as sights, night vision and GPS capabilities that will reach Reserve units by the end of the year.
The White Paper also announces two increases in the remuneration of reservists through the introduction of a paid annual leave entitlement in respect of training days and through the accrual of pension entitlements.
Jack said: In recent years the Reservist Forces have been called upon to serve on operational tours in some of the most dangerous places on earth, often under very difficult conditions. They have risen to this challenge, excelled and done the Reserve Forces proud and in some cases have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our great country.
Reservists make an extraordinary commitment and in return the Government must support their service. Therefore there are a lot of things to be pleased at in today s announcement. The White Paper sets out details on an improved package of welfare support for reservists. I am pleased that the Government also plans to increase support to SME employers with a £500 a month financial support package for those business s employing reservists who are mobilised and that it is taking steps to make liability for call up more predictable.
The plans announced will mean that Reserves will now have access to the latest kit and equipment and will train with regular units fully integrated. They will have the training and support to undertake the a range of military tasks and will now have a paid leave entitlement and access to the Future Armed Forces Pension Scheme. Furthermore Reservists will continue to be paid a
tax-free annual bounty restructured to reward their commitment and achievements more effectively as well as receiving better access to welfare support.
However these plans are of course not a substitute for a fully manned and supported Regular Force, but today s announcements is very positive for the Reserves who are an essential component of our national security, our future forces and success on operations.
