Baileys Court Achieves Top Eco Schools Award
December 2nd, 2010
We have learned that Baileys Court Primary School is the proud recipient of the top Eco Schools Award – the Green Flag.
Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework that helps embed principles of sustainable development and sustainable practices into the heart of everyday school life. Having registered with the programme, schools follow a seven-step process which helps them to address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from transport, litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity.
The important thing is that the children themselves are the driving force behind Eco-Schools they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the pupils that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, providing schools with all the evidence they need to really shout about their environmental success.
Schools work towards gaining one of three awards Bronze, Silver and the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. Bronze and Silver are both self accredited through the Eco Schools website and Green Flag is externally assessed by Keep Britain Tidy, which is reponsible for running Eco-Schools in England.
The Government wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020 and with this aim the Sustainable Schools Framework was launched four years ago in 2006. There are currently over 14,000 schools registered, which equates to over 60% of the schools in England! Of all those registered only 1245 have achieved the Green Flag award to date.
So Well Done to Bailey’s Court Primary School!!
Look out for our new edition of Bradley Stoke Matters at New Year containing feedback from the pupils themselves on ‘How We Got Our Green Flag’.
