Big money to support big ambition at SGS

Tom SGSBack in the summer of 2014 SGS College launched a plan to support learners that wanted to start up their own small business. This proved popular with students and after receiving presentations from a handful of learners, one in particular stood out.

Business Student, Tom Bryant was the lucky entrepreneur whose potential stood out against the rest. The 19 year old from Coalpit Heath wanted to officially launch his company named Alien Hockey; an online retail and manufacturer of performance hockey equipment.

Alien Hockey was started in 2011 with an aim to bring something different to the market, something that provided performance and style, something that was ‘out of this world . Following a successful presentation to senior managers and governors at SGS, the College supported Tom with £5,000 to go towards the costs of marketing and promotion.

Since then Tom s business has gone from strength to strength and he now is currently marketing his organisation by sponsoring a number of international players.

Tom comments: “Whilst at SGS College studying Business, I developed Alien Hockey on the side; sourcing manufacturers, testing products and creating websites.

“In 2014 SGS started a Small Business Grant programme. I applied for help and funding for my business and thanks to the support from the College I was able to officially launch my business in August 2014.

“The business now supplies products to elite athletes around the world and have distributors in many countries. SGS College was a great support in getting the business up and running. ”

Tom Beasley, Head of Commercial Development at SGS comments: “Tom had to present his plans for his business, Alien Hockey, to the Vice Principal and two of our governors. Tom really impressed, and had already made an incredible start to his business with an established international supply chain for hockey equipment and endorsements from international hockey players. We hope that with the Colleges support Tom can further grow his business and become even more successful. ”
