Bradley Stoke Youth U14 Girls GFA County Cup Finalists 2016 UpdateMarch 16th, 2016
When BSYFC U14 Girls entered the early rounds of the GFA County Cup way back in Oct 2015 no-one expected that they would be announcing they would be playing in the Final on March 13th 2016.
In the early rounds the team managed to avoid any pitfalls and qualified without too much trouble for the quarter final stages in November, where they were unfortunate to get drawn against the unbeaten Cheltenham Spa Blues team who were sitting top of the Gloucester County U14 League with a proud record of played 12, won 11 and drawn 1 for the season. At least BSYFC did have home advantage for the match!
The early signs were not good as the Cheltenham Spa team were 3-0 up after just 20 minutes. But football is a funny game and you just never know what may happen – and so the comeback began with BSYFC getting a goal back through Libby Hunt, then another with an own goal and then just before half time the equalising goal was scored by Libby Hunt again to make the match all square at 3-3. The second half started just like the first half had finished with BSYFC on top and pressing for more goals. BSYFC got their reward and they scored another 3 goals in the second half through Amber Lewis, Emily Holbrook and Cassie Whittle to win through to the semi-finals with an unbelievable fight back to win 6-3.
The semi-final match was played against Bishops Cleeve Colts on Feb 7th and was supposed to be another home match for BSYFC.
The weather was so bad during November, December, January that when BSYFC arrived at for the match in February the team had last played back in early December. Worse still BSYFC could not play at home as the pitch was still too wet. The match was played in terrible conditions with a high wind blowing end to end down the pitch and the rain coming down at certain stages of the match. However BSYFC fought hard, holding on to the win with the final score 3-2 and a place in the Cup Final secured.
FINAL DAY: 13th March v AEK Boco
It was a very tight match where both teams had chances to score. AEK Boco took the lead in the first half when they broke through and shot. Abbie Pickett the GK saved the shot but it rebounded and hit the striker and the ball ended up in the net. Just before half time Emily Holbrook shot but the defender just got her foot to it and deflected the ball wide of the goal.
Very late on in the 2nd half when BSYFC were pressing to try and score, AEK Boco had a break away and crossed the ball and their player cut inside to shoot into the net. The final score was 2-0 to AEK Boco.
The match was end to end and played at a high pace on a sunny day. Both teams must be praised for the high quality of football on display in the final. BSYFC girls gave everything and managers Martin Lee and Ross Lee are very proud of their achievements.
The Managers having got to 2 cup finals in 2 years with the team are hoping their jobs will be safe for next season!
