Bristol’s Henleaze Flower Club – Bradley Stoke winner

Bristol’s Henleaze Flower Club members swept the board with their floral arrangements for the Westbury-on-Trym village show on 3 Sept – including winning the Courage Cup Trophy for the best exhibit in flower arranging and the Trustee Bank Trophy for most points in the Flower Arranging Classes.

Beginner and complete novice Ro York from Bradley Stoke was the surprised winner of the two Trophies.  She says, “it was amazing fun, as well as hard work and a precipitous learning curve, to have a go as a complete newbie – and fun to win – not only with my flower arrangements but also my prized pot plant!”

She credits her success to the excellent support and coaching from their very experienced Teacher Kath Taylor who runs the club’s monthly practice classes. She also had to ask her neighbours in Campion Drive to drink white wine to provide enough empty bottles for the mechanics of her winning design.

Deputy Chair Jane Voke says, “it was great to have so many entries from club members supporting this traditional show – including in classes other than flower arranging”. The success of the show, which raises money for charity, depends on people joining in and having a go, as well as the many volunteers behind the scenes and on the day.

There were many classes specifically for children to get families involved, and Jane says, “next year the flower club aims to sponsor a class and trophy for the young flower arranger of the future”.
