BSIB Tallest Sunflower Competition has a winner!

Bradley Stoke in Bloom’s ‘Tallest Sunflower competition has a winner! Or rather two! James & Sophie Dent, from Meadowbrook School, were declared the winners with two sunflowers, which measured a whopping 2.66m and 2.88m tall!

The judging was not without incident.   The BSiB Steering Committee, following a quick check of the rules to see if you had to live in Bradley Stoke to enter and how to identify the Town Councils seeds, spent a busy couple of hours dashing around the town to measure the sunflowers and handing out certificates. And it was only after a second measuring of Levy Hartnell s sunflower, that a winner could be declared.

Green fingered James, aged 7 and Sophie, aged 4, also impressed the judges with a tour of their other successes; pumpkins, chillies and tomatoes, although the strawberries had all been ‘quality tested ! The siblings have agreed to share the prize, an engraved sunflower trophy, plant pot, hand fork & trowel set, packets of seeds and some treat size chocolates. The trophy is being taken into school to show everyone.

Dad, Andy Dent said, “The children worked very hard growing their sunflowers from planting the seeds through to planting them out. They watered them and fed them weekly and left instructions for their grandparents to look after them when we went on holiday. They are delighted with the trophy and the prizes, it has made their day.”

The BSiB Committee would like to say Thank You to everyone who entered and is already busy discussing next year’s competition, which may be ‘Best Plant Pot .

New members would be very welcome, so please email them on [email protected] to join or for more information on their upcoming workdays (3rd Saturday of the month) or with your suggestions on areas that could be improved in Bradley Stoke.
