Celebrating the 100th cake baked by Free Cakes for Kids Bristol
July 28th, 2014
Free Cakes for Kids is a UK-wide voluntary community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. Here in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, over fifty volunteers regularly bake birthday cakes for families, the majority of whom are referred to us through the fourteen children’s charities we work with. Our service is provided to, amongst others, young carers, refugees, disabled children, those with life limiting illnesses and severe social need. The aim is to make a small difference to that family in celebrating their child’s birthday, and hopefully give them a special memory.
On 02 August 2014, we will provide our 100th cake to Incredible Kids, a Bristol based charity that provides a safe play environment for children who have additional needs, as well as giving support to their parents and siblings.
Jennifer Prewett, trustee of Incredible Kids said Free Cakes for Kids are like a little bit of sunshine in the lives of the children who visit Incredible Kids. As a charity we provide a lifeline to families with disabled children in Bristol and those families all have very challenging lives. The cakes which Free Cakes for Kids deliver to our Saturday play sessions are always beautiful and our families look forward to the times when they arrive. Without their cakes, life would be missing that little bit of joy that they bring us .
Rachel Ashley, area organiser for Free Cakes for Kids in Bristol said, 100 cakes is a massive achievement for Free Cakes for Kids in Bristol which is run entirely by volunteers who provide their time, talents and cake ingredients for free, asking for nothing in return other than for a child to have a happier birthday. We love working with all of our partner organisations who refer their families because they are having a bit of a tough time. We hope we can make life a bit easier for them, even if it just for one day and with one cake at a time .
The 100th cake celebration will take place at Incredible Kids at Christ the King Church in Bradley Stoke on 02 August 2014. where Free Cakes for Kids bakers and Incredible Kids families will come together for a Hawaiian themed party.
