It all starts with an amazing teacher! Meadowbrook Teacher Wins National Award
May 16th, 2014
Matt Smith of Meadowbrook Primary School, South Gloucestershire, has been announced as a Silver Teaching Award Winner in the category, The Award for Outstanding use of Technology in Education.
We were delighted to be invited to Meadowbrook’s assembly this morning where Matt Smith was announced as a winner and presented with his trophy by Mayor Brian Hopkinson. Olympus Academy Executive Head Dave Baker was also present to congratulate Matt.
Headteacher Jon Barr told us:
“Matt Smith joined Meadowbrook Primary School as a newly qualified teacher in September 2011 and it soon became clear that he is an exceptionally talented teacher with a vision to enhance learning through the use of technology. The implementation of his ideas has had a profoundly beneficial effect on the whole school! He has integrated advanced technology into the teaching at Meadowbrook Primary and as such is said to be transforming our school, our teachers and most importantly our students . He has introduced an innovative one to one iPad scheme so that the use of iPads at home and school is now fully integrated into children’s learning and pedagogy in the classrooms. He has led developments on the use of a wide range of Apps and Apple TV, connected to projectors; all dedicated to supporting the children s computer literacy as well as their learning outcomes. And most importantly, he has inspired the children to love learning! He is truly a worthy recipient of this prestigious Award.”
Matt has led the school on a learning journey with technology and the results we are now seeing in school are telling us the impact of that leadership. We are very proud of him and the children he and his colleagues have inspired.
Selected from over 20,000 nominations received by the Pearson Teaching Awards in 2014, Matt s celebration is one of just 55 that took place in schools and colleges across England, Ireland and Wales on Thank a Teacher Day, today 16 May 2014, when prestigious Silver Pearson Teaching Awards were presented to outstanding local heroes of education.
Matt told us I feel a bit shaky – it all feels surreal! It is nice to get recognition but it wouldn t be possible without the children .
The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching, founded in 1999 by Lord Puttnam, they recognize the life-changing impact of an inspirational teacher on the lives of the young people they teach.
Matt will now join fellow Silver Award winners at the UK final of the Teaching Awards at London s Guildhall on 26th October, where 10 Silver Award winners will receive a Gold Award. The ceremony will be filmed and broadcast by the BBC.
Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, president of the Teaching Awards said, I am genuinely proud and honoured to be the president of the Teaching Awards. I owe so much of what I ve done to my fantastic teachers at school and university and it is exciting to join in celebrating what is probably the most important profession of them all.
Matt Smith has been the inspiration behind the innovative use of technology in the classrooms of Meadowbrook Primary. It is fantastic that this innovation, and his hard work and dedication has not only been recognised at a national level but has won the Silver award; with the real possibility of winning Gold in October 2014 Claire Wingate Chair of Governors at Meadowbrook Primary School
