Join South Gloucestershire’s Big Spring Clean

South-Glos-Logo-newA call for volunteers goes out to businesses, community groups and residents across South Gloucestershire to support the annual Big Spring Clean, which returns from 1 March to 30 April.

South Gloucestershire Council  are looking for people to join  them in taking action against litter to give our neighbourhoods and open spaces a spring clean. The national Big Spring Clean campaign is open to anyone – individuals, parish councils, schools, local businesses, voluntary groups, conservation groups, scouts, brownies, church groups, youth groups, neighbourhood groups and any other groups who want to get involved.

Last year 64 groups took part in the campaign, with 2,000 volunteers collecting 400 bags of rubbish to improve the local environment.

Volunteers can request free bin bags and gloves and can also borrow litter pickers and hoops (litter picking equipment is available to loan throughout the year). After the event,  SGC can arrange to collect and dispose of the rubbish and recycling. Recycling is encouraged and different types of bags can be provided.

Cllr Claire Young, Chair of the Communities Committee, said: “For several years the Big Spring Clean has helped bring local communities together to tidy up their local areas. It’s the perfect opportunity to venture down to your local green space, woodland or river and help improve its appearance whilst enjoying some fresh air. This year we hope even more people will join us to help ensure that South Gloucestershire is an even cleaner and greener place to live. ”

Alison Richards, South Gloucestershire Council s Street Cleansing Coordinator, said: “Many of our neighbourhoods in South Gloucestershire do regular litter picks, but this offers a chance to join a larger coordinated campaign. We welcome new groups to sign up, and can offer free loans of equipment as well as help and support with organising an event. ”
