Launch of Poppy Appeal this Friday at Parkway Station

Stoke Gifford branch of the Royal British Legion s Poppy Appeal launch is being held on 24th October at Parkway Station at 2pm. Members of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch will be attending and a Bugler will play Reveille to mark the launch. Branch Vice President Jack Lopresti MP will be attending.
The Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion is celebrating another successful year, raising about £35,000 for the 2013/14 Poppy Appeal which ran from 1st October 2013 to 30th September 2014. Nationally the Royal British Legion raised £38,903,357.52 in 2013/14, a rise of £1.93 million 5.2%.
Hilary Bloor, Stoke Gifford Branch Chair said The Poppy Appeal Launch is the start of our year for collecting monies for the welfare and support of service and ex-service personnel, their families and dependants. Last year Stoke Gifford Branch raised about £35,000 and we appreciate the public’s generosity to this cause .
The money raised by the Poppy Appeal goes towards the Legion s Welfare Fund. Currently the Legion is spending £1.6 million EVERY WEEK in help and support, so it needs the continued generous support of the public, businesses, the media and other organisations to help raise the funding it requires to fund its welfare work. Terry Webber, the Stoke Gifford Branch s Chair of Welfare said The need is as great as ever .

The RBL has just opened a new Pop In Centre in 62 Union Street, Bristol, where people can call in for for advice and information on the charity’s support and community services.
The Stoke Gifford Branch will be putting static tins in numerous venues around the area, and it will have shifts of collectors in various stores and shopping centres locally, (for example Sainsbury s, Stoke Gifford; ASDA, Filton; The Willow Brook Centre, Bradley Stoke) and in Bristol Parkway Station, Stoke Gifford.
The Branch will again be supplying its legendary knitted poppies which have been the great hit of recent years!
On November 6th Members of the armed services, in Uniform, will collecting around Bristol including at Stoke Gifford Branch Venues – Bristol Parkway Station and Sainsbury s in Stoke Gifford.

Branch spokesman, David Bell said: – We would like to thank the Public, our volunteers, the great team of Poppy Knitters and the businesses and other organisations that have helped us raise our great total for 2013/14 and for their support for the 2014/15 Poppy Appeal. The media have been great in helping to promote the Poppy Appeal and this helps boost the totals raised and raises awareness of the Legion s welfare work.
Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion now has its own Radio Show on community radio station Bradley Stoke Radio, (BSR 103.4 FM), called The Legion Weekly . It is broadcast on Sundays, 11am 12noon. It is broadcast on 103.4FM and online on the BSR website, past shows are also available online.
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY SERVICE – STOKE GIFFORD: – A Remembrance Service will be held at 10.20am on Remembrance Sunday, Sunday 9th November, 2014, at the Stoke Gifford War Memorial on The Green in North Road, Stoke Gifford. This will be followed by Church Services.
