Mayfest Bristol – Your Chance to Participate with Artist Dora Garcia

The Arnolfini art centre in Bristol is currently developing a project as part of Mayfest that may be of interest to people in the Bradley Stoke and surrounding communities. The Mayfest festival takes place across Bristol 5-15 May (http://www.mayfestbristol.co.uk) and the centre is working with the Spanish artist Dora Garcia to create a project called Rezos (Prayers): Bristol. Dora is looking for a small number of Bristol based people who might be interested in participating in her project.

If you are interested in working with an Internationally significant artist to take part in a new site specific online project in Bristol, then see below for more details or contact Sarah Warden here by 1 April. Ten people will be placed in different parts of Bristol at different hours of the day on Sat 7 May with the challenge to describe everything they see and hear. These descriptions, recited like prayers, will delve into the people, attitudes, architecture, habits, sounds, smells and impressions of Bristol.

All ten audio recordings will then be available for download, to listen, reproduce and combine online from 9 May at http://doragarcia.org/rezos/bristol
Dora García has been chosen to represent Spain in the 2011 Venice Biennale.

All participants will need to attend a briefing session on either Thurs 7 April at 6.30pm or Fri 8 April 10.30am with the artist, as well as be available on the 7 May for the event. Previous performance experience is not essential.

Dora García’s work features different media including film, video, photography and performance. She often uses texts and stories as a basis for scenarios which raise complex ethical and moral questions, and which yet remain entertaining and witty. The analysis of paradigms and conventions of art is a central motif in García s works.
