Official: It’s Better By Bike in Bradley Stoke

Today’s Car Versus Bike Challenge, organised by Better By Bike and local radio station JACK FM, has demonstrated how much quicker it can be to travel by bicycle rather than by car.

In one of a series of cycling challenges taking place throughout Bristol’s rush hour hot spots this week, cyclist Craig Denning competed against JACK FM’s driver. The route took them from The Giant Cycle store at the Willow Brook Centre to the middle of the Aztec West Business Park, starting just after 8am. With a straight run along the recently-created cycle path, Craig won the race easily, in an impressive time of just 3 minutes, 48 seconds. Trailing far behind, stuck in the usual early-morning traffic along Bradley Stoke Way, it took the car driver 15 minutes and 11 seconds to complete the run.

Winner Craig said “It’s the first time I’ve cycled that route; I was really impressed because it’s a really nice route, with cycle paths and zebra crossings.”

The losing car driver said “I had been quite optimistic – but there was a lot of traffic. I was stuck in the traffic for most of the journey.”
