SGS wins local college’s football tournamentMay 16th, 2016
South Gloucestershire and Stroud College were triumphant last week in winning the Ability Counts Football Tournament against other local institutions in the South West.
Taking place on 11th May, the two teams from the Preparation for Work and Life department competed against three teams from Bridgewater College, two teams from Somerset College and one team from South Devon College.
Held at Bridgwater College, the students played in a round robin Euro 16 tournament comprising of 4 matches in a qualifying group over all. After torrential rain on the astro-turf stopped play outside so the games carried on in the sports hall.
Both SGS teams were undefeated in the group stages. One SGS team narrowly missed out on qualifying on goal difference, the other team captained by Ashley Risdale, played Somerset College in the final. They won the game 1-0 with a crucial winning goal from Josh Starr.
Coach Darren Garman commented: “All 13 players that represented SGS were a credit to the College as they played in great spirits and very competitively in difficult conditions. To have both teams undefeated, and one to go on and win the final shows how well they played and I am proud of every one of them.”
Student and captain of the SGS Northern Ireland team Ashley Risdale said “I was pleased the way the lads all fought hard as a team to help us win the trophy.”Tags: college, football, sgs Back to news
