Stoke Gifford Short Mat Bowls Club
March 17th, 2013
This month we were pleased to be invited to meet the friendly folk at the Stoke Gifford Short Mat Bowls Club which runs from the Trust Hall.
The group are looking to encourage new members, both men and woman who would enjoy meeting up once or twice a week to meet friends, enjoy a chat and some gentle (indoor) means of exercise.
It s a nice afternoon out, a friendly game and good exercise. Ken Jones
The group was started by a group of local friends in 1993. The Trust Committee wanted to encourage greater use of the premises and so bought the first set of equipment and … the Club was formed!
During our visit we met with one founding member, Gordon Taylor, the very first Chairman who is
still playing today!
I retired last April and started playing outdoor Bowls, a seasonal sport from April to October. I enjoyed it so much but wanted something I could take part in all year round. They are a lovely group of people, very welcoming and very kind newcomers . Jim Hawkins
Short mat bowls is an indoor sport in which players attempt to score points by rolling a heavy ball (called a Wood) along a flat surface, to gain as many shots as possible by getting their bowls nearer to the jack than their opponents, and so outscoring them. The game is a modern variation on lawn bowls, from which it is derived. Indoor Short Mat Bowling is not as long as outside bowling, although some members do participate in outdoor bowls in the summer as well, through Clubs such as the Bradley Stoke Bowls Club.
The Short Mat Bowls Club runs on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons at the Trust Hall in Stoke Gifford. It runs all year round and as it s indoors, it doesn t matter how much it rains!.
If you would like to join the Club, or just find out more, please contact our Membership Secretary, George Lord
