Warning: Rogue Traders at Large
May 9th, 2011South Gloucestershire Trading Standards would like to remind residents to be extra vigilant when dealing with unexpected visits from traders. They have become aware of a new tactic being used to gain entry into people s home asking to check the insulation in the roof. Two recent instances indicate that whilst the resident is with the person checking the roof, another has then taken money from other rooms in the house.
A recent operation carried out by Trading Standards and the Police also found rogue trader activity was present right across South Gloucestershire. The work involved was predominantly home and garden improvements, patios and paving. Officers became aware of instances where residents were pressured into agreeing to work being carried out, where contract paperwork was backdated to deprive residents of their legal right to cancel, and adding VAT to a figure already agreed where the resident wanted to pay by cheque.
If you think you have fallen victim to such activities, or would like further advice, please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
