Winterbourne Boys in County Championships!

st-michaels-U11s-Nov-15Good luck to the U11 boys football team from St Michael’s Primary School in Winterbourne as they travel to Gloucester tomorrow to represent South Gloucestershire in the County Championships. We received this report from Coach, George Haskins….

U11 Football Success at St Michael’’s, Winterbourne

On the 10th November we entered the St Michael’’s boys football team into the ESFA 7-a-side boys’ tournament at the GFA Headquarters in Almondsbury. The team played 3 group matches, winning 2 and drawing one to finish at the top of the group. After some tricky performances in both the quarter finals and the semi finals we reached the final, where we unfortunately lost on penalties! However, lucky for us it was the top two finalists that qualified for the Qualifying round for the County Championships!

The Qualifying round was held on the 27th November, also at the GFA Headquarters.  The team was put into a round-robin league of 4 teams, the winner of which would earn the honour of representing South Gloucestershire at the County Championships!

Two matches down and we had won them both! However our final opponent had also won both their games, so it all came down to the last result.  In our favour was the fact that our team had scored more goals in the first two games, so if we drew we would win the group!

The last match started well but, seemingly out of no where, our opponents scored first. The match continued with lots of near misses but in the last 30 seconds of the match we scored to make the final score an even 1-1! The final whistle went and we had won the group on goal difference by 1 goal!

So, little St Michael’’s Primary School in Winterbourne are now representing South Gloucestershire in the U11s Boys County Championships due to take place on the 16th December in Gloucester.  The boys (and their proud coach!) are loving every second of this adventure!
