Winterbourne International Academy Principal retires
February 23rd, 2015
Mr Rob C Evans, Principal of Winterbourne International Academy, has announced to staff and parents that he will be retiring at the end of the 2014-15 academic year.
Rob has spent 33 years at the Academy and its predecessor The Ridings High School, with the last six years as Academy Principal.
Winterbourne International Academy, which caters for secondary school students aged 11-19 years old, was the first educational establishment in South Gloucestershire to break the 80% barrier of students achieving 5A*-C grades including English and Maths at GCSE level. The Academy has consistently delivered strong results and produced a crop of students who have hit the headlines through achievement both inside and outside of the school including Oxford University student Jessica Woodland-Scott, U17 English Badminton Champion Jess Hopton, Synchronised swimmer Georgia Denner, England Rugby ace Dave Atwood, and Youtube dance sensation Levanna McLean.
Rob Evans studied Economics and Geography at Reading University and completed his PGCSE at UCW Aberystwyth. Having commenced at the Ridings High School in September 1982, Rob taught Geography and Economics along with Humanities and PE before progressing to Year Head and Deputy Head.
In addition to maintaining high teaching standards at the Academy, one of Rob Evans most significant contributions has been the management of the £19million new Academy building that opened to students in September 2014.
Rob Evans said I would like to personally thank the skilled and dedicated staff that I have had the honour of working with. The support and commitment of parents/carers has always been much appreciated and remains a key factor behind our success.
However, without doubt what has made the last 33 years very special for me has been the students. Our talented, hardworking and enthusiastic students make Winterbourne International Academy the Academy that it is today. I look forward to working with you over the next few months as we continue to move forward with the developments that we have in place.
Chris Smith, Chairman of The Ridings Federation of Academies Trust, thanked Rob for his hard work over the years Rob has been a fantastic ambassador for Winterbourne International Academy. His knowledge within education and his consistently high standards has helped ensure students and staff alike meet their potential. Students will be benefiting from his work for many years to come.
Rob Evans is married and has two children. He is an allotment holder and enjoys all sports, especially Welsh rugby.
Once retired, Rob plans to travel for the first part of the next academic year before coaching rugby and working with disadvantaged children.
