Winterbourne International Academy students win place in National Final of British Schools Karting Championship 2014
May 8th, 2014Three Winterbourne students, Jordan Gilbertson, Connor Groves and Matthew Baker have won a place in the National Final of the British Schools Karting Championship (BSKC) 2014. They will compete against the best 32 school and college teams at Whilton Mill on 19th July, just two weeks after the British Formula 1 race at nearby Silverstone.
During the regional finals on 27th April, the Winterbourne team scored 93 points out of a possible 100, giving them the joint highest score in the competition along with a team of college students . This is a huge achievement in itself as they were competing against 27 other teams.
The British Schools Karting Championship (BSKC) is an arrive and drive karting championship that brings competitive, cost effective karting into UK schools. The championship has been going for 8 years but already over 10,000 students have raced in the BSKC and competed for the title of British School Karting Champions.
Mark Turner, Championship Manager at the BSKC said: Congratulations to the team from Winterbourne International Academy, it is a huge achievement to make it to the British Schools Karting Championship National Final. The 2014 BSKC has seen thousands of students race for the title so just getting to the National Final is already a victory!”
The BSKC is designed to introduce young people to competitive karting. As well as offering a sport that is not always available at a schools level the BSKC provides a simple route for talented students to take part in the exciting world of motorsports. With the students this year over 10,000 young people have taken part in the competition since it started. Schools use the BSKC in many ways but many have told us that participation has helped to increase their students motivation and confidence and enabled them to develop skills that they need both at school and in the workplace.
Rob Evans, Academy Principal said, “It is indeed an excellent achievement by the boys. They are a credit to the Academy both on and off the track.”
