2013 MS Community Cake Bake
July 8th, 2013
Wow, what a fantastic turnout from local people to the 2013 MS Community Cake Break!
Editors of all the local community Matters magazines joined with Kerry from Bishopston Matters to help at a fundraising event close to Kerry s heart. Kerry s father suffered with MS for 40 years and very sadly lost his battle last year. Kerry has been raising funds for the MS Society for several years as a thank you for the support they have given to her dad and this was her third Community Cake Bake, the success of which has grown for the third consecutive year!
In Kerry s words: The event took place at the Horfield Baptist Church, the perfect venue for eating, drinking and having fun! A big thank you to the church and their volunteers for allowing us to use it for the day. Despite the hot weather we enjoyed an excellent turn out, the beautiful singing from the Ashley Down Community Choir was a big draw early on, followed by the impressive Learner Brass Band. A huge thank you to these two groups for offering their time, their fine music created a wonderful, happy atmosphere.
There was an amazing array of scrumptious home made cakes of all varieties created by local people and businesses Amelies Larder, Delmonico, Fresh Ground Cafe, Gopal s Curry Shack, Joes s Bakery, KooKoo Cafe, Pretty Amazing Cakes and The Tea Garden to name but a few.
There was some fabulous face painting by the extremely talented Sophie Atkinson from Fairly Odd Face Painting, there were plenty of super heros and princesses running around!
Other kids activities included cake decorating, badge making, guess the name of the bear, mask making and lucky dip! Dawn Clode of Life and Soul Empowerment was there on the day discussing with people enhancing, holistic treatments for those that suffer with MS or any other ailment www.life-and-soulempowerment. co.uk
It was great to have ladies from sister Matters Magazines joiningforces on the day to promote MS and do what we love the most – getting in amongst the community. With over 40 excellent prizes the raffle was a big hit, many people left happy with one of the fantastic prizes on offer to include tickets to the Gloucestershire County Cricket, Hair cuts and colours, meals out, Free Dog Vaccinations, Ted Baker sunglasses, champagne, a cuddly toy! And much. much more. A massive thank you to the following local businesses for their brilliant contributions Artemis Jewellery, Bishopston Fish Bar, Bristol Building Company, Chatsworth Homes, Christine Higgs Textiles, Delmonico, Express Keys, Fig, Fizz Hair, The Flower Shop, Gaia Clinic, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, GP Care, Graham Sothcott Guitar Tuition, Green Room Hair, I Love my PC, Jane Ormes Print, Jemima Lumley Jewellery, Joe s Bakery, KooKoo Cafe, KudaCan, Life and Soul Empowerment, Lunar Optical, Matters Magazines, Oddsox, Playfull Toyshop, Robyn Coetzee Glass, Srumptiously Sweet, Slimming World, The Royal Oak, The Tea Garden, Vets4Pets Bishopston, Yoga West.
Andy Jarrett, Area Fundraiser for the MS Society was quite overwhelmed when he visited on the day. He was hugely impressed to witness the community coming together in such a positive way to support the charity. It is a disease that I know touches many families in some way. We will continue to work hard to try and beat MS.
Sadly dad was not with us this year but I think he would have been proud of the event and all that joined in to help raise awareness and money for MS. Thank you all so much for helping us achieve this, we hope to see all of you, and more, again next year!
“Myself and family are truly delighted with the love and support shown to us once again this year at the community Cake Break and I am delighted to report we raised £620 for the Bristol MS Society.”
Dear Kerry
I understand from Andy Jarrett that your hard work and commitment to the recent Cake Break raised £620 for the Bristol and South Gloucestershire Branch of the MS Society. What a fantastic achievement, and I can tell you that my committee was overwhelmed by the generosity of not only you and your family, but also the local residents who clearly provided support and cash! Please pass on our thanks to all who contributed to the successful outcome of the day.
As yet there has been no specific decision made about the use of your kind donation, but we are working on a number of issues, all of which will require funding to a greater or lesser degree. Our main priority, given the new start for the Branch, is to raise awareness of not only MS as an illness but also the availability of local support, social and financial, and information for those affected by the disease. In addition, we need to know more about local people affected by MS and who could benefit from our services, whether or not they are members of the MS Society.
If people would like to join the MS Society they can do so on-line, by going to www.mssociety.org.uk, which is the National Centre website. They will find an online membership form there, and the current cost of membership is £5 per year. That money is transferred to the Bristol Branch in due course.
If people would like to volunteer to work with the Bristol Branch in any capacity, they can contact me in the first instance, and I will take it from there. Enquiries can be made using [email protected]
Anyone needing support from the Branch should use [email protected] or call 0785 557 1592.
