Baileys Court Primary School pupils power light!

P1010164Bradley Stoke Matters has been pleased to receive a further update from the pupils at Baileys Court Primary School who are learning how to create electricity from waste, with the help of UWE.

“This week, we’ve had lots of fun. Debbie and Jon kept us busy for the full 2 hours of the session!

“First, we each looked at our petri dishes, which we had used to discover how dirty our hands were the week before. We all had unique markings of bacteria on our dishes. We had to draw what our bacteria looked like on our petri dishes. Then we had to number the different colonies. We had a key and a chart and for each of the colonies we had to write down their individual markings. We had to compare these unique makings with other colonies, and see how many different types there were.

“Next, Jon came in and we took a reading for our microbial fuel cells. Firstly, we did a closed circuit voltage, then we did an open circuit voltage. After that, Jon told us we were going to do a small experiment with our microbial fuel cells and a LED light. He linked all our microbial fuel cells together, then, connected the light to them. Then we flicked a switch to power the bulb. It worked! Jon said he wasn’t expecting for it to work, as it was so early in the series of the lessons. He also said that soon, maybe, we would be able to power something bigger.
