Free 80’s Day At Bradley Stoke Library

The 1980s are being remembered with a free, day long celebration of the decade which brought us legwarmers, Live Aid, the Rubik s Cube, Adam Ant and E.T.

Bradley Stoke Library is the venue for the BBC s “Back to the ‘80s ” event on Saturday 21st May between 9am and 4pm. Highlights include films from the BBC Bristol archives, ‘80s Punk and New Romantics make-up, a news and music quiz, history displays, books and newspaper cuttings, BBC Sound Archive recordings as well as discussion about the origins of this once rural part of South Gloucestershire.

There will be a guest appearance from BBC Points West weatherman, Ian Fergusson between 9.45am and 11.45am. Meanwhile BBC Radio Bristol will be broadcasting live from the event throughout the day.

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for communities for South Gloucestershire Council says; “This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to discover the roots of Bradley Stoke. The area is unrecognisable from the farmland and fields which stood here just a quarter of a century ago ”.

In 1986 the area now known as Bradley Stoke was included in an ambitious BBC survey to record an electronic snapshot of everyday life across the UK for future generations. Nationwide a million volunteers took part in the Domesday Project. Now, 25 years later, everyone can explore the archive online, see the pictures, update the information and make their own mark on this fascinating record of our history.

Trish Campbell from BBC Learning says; “We re inviting everyone to come along to experience the way we lived in the 1980s and help us update the pictures and information. We d love people to bring their photos and stories of modern day Bradley Stoke so that we can trace the changes over the last two and a half decades ”.
