Great Wall to Raise funds for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research
March 14th, 2013
Following our articles in the December issue of LSGM and Jan/Feb issue of BSM regarding local resident Jo Bray who is Cycling the Great Wall to Raise funds for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research later this year, we thought we would catch up with her for an update to see how both her training and fundraising are going along.
Training is going well. I am cycling long distances three days on the trot now, so am getting there. Only four weeks to go (when we spoke in mid-March), so the next 3 weeks will see some more intense training and longer rides.
Fundraising is still going well, I have a long way to go to hit my £5,000 target but I’m still hopeful I’ll get there eventually.
Jo has a very touch schedule during her ride:-
Day 1 – Fly out on the 13 April to Beijing
Day 2 – Arrive in Beijing and then have a 2 hour transfer to Yanqing. This is where the bikes will be kitted out to inidivdual’s specification.
Day 3 – 65kms today from Yanqing to Badaling to Changping. 20km will be very hilly terrain as Jo climbs towards the next destination.
Day 4 – 90kms from Changping to Huairou County. Again another day full of hills, although the views are meant to be spectacular!
Day 5 – 98kms from Huairou to Miyun Resevoir. Another day of hills with a delightful downhill section near the end!
Day 6 – 90kms from Miyun to Jinshanling. Again another day of hills witnessing the rural life typical of Northern China.
Day 7 – 110kms from Jinshanling to Huangyaguan. Longest day today…
Day 8 – 25kms from Huangyaguan to Pinggu County. Last leg and a nice short ride today.
Day 9 – Day of relaxing and sightseeing in Beijing.
Day 10 – Fly home after an exhausting, exciting challenge, hopefully with lots of stories to tell!
Jo concludes – Silly little thing, with all this training I’ve lost 1.5 stones, dropped down two dress sizes and am fitter than I have ever been. I have found a sport I love and won’t give up after the challenge. I’m sure some more will come up but not quite as daunting as this one.
We wish Jo all the best with her challenge and look forward to hearing from more form her when she gets back.
