Help give Hope to Morgan

Morgan Walker. The face of local resident Morgan Walker has rapidly become a familiar one across the Stokes, appearing in local publications, on television, T-shirts and flyers. His hand print is the logo of the ‘Hope for Morgan appeal, created in his favourite colours of black and red.

Morgan was born 8 weeks premature, weighing just 3Ib 10oz and spent the first traumatic month of his life in the neo-nato unit. At two months old he returned to hospital (on his due date) for an MRI brain scan. The results of this scan were devastating for the family, who were advised Morgan had cerebral palsy and it was unlikely he would ever walk or talk.

Thankfully Morgan proved everyone wrong and walked at 17 months and can talk, he even attends a mainstream school – Wheatfield Primary.

Having endured 19 operations and procedures in his eleven years, taking medication daily and sleeping with an oxygen heart monitor, Morgan suffers from additional complications as well as the daily effects of cerebral palsy. His mum, Zoe, states “His determination to succeed in life in everything he does is a testament to him and his will to be just like his peers ”.

Morgan has been offered the opportunity to undergo surgery in the USA. Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy aims to improve mobility and increase independence through neurosurgical procedure. It is a chance to significantly improve his quality of life and reduce the pain Morgan constantly endures.

“There is no cure for Morgan, but there is hope and, like any parent, we would do anything for our child. Our aim is to give him the best possible chance in life ”.

The Walker family have set out to raise £70k (the amount calculated by the Tree of Hope Charity to cover the cost of the operations, acquiring the equipment that will help Morgan with his rehabilitation and his intensive physiotherapy to ensure he gets the best results).

The appeal kicked off with great momentum and “Over-whelming support ” from family, friends, colleagues, local residents and businesses. Wrist bands have been sold through local schools, clubs and companies. At time of writing £21,424.18 has been raised so far. Donations, bag packing and a sponsored walk have equated to 30% of the target with more events planned (see box below).

You can make a difference; every penny counts! Whether a business or individual, please contribute to a local, life changing cause by donating, purchasing wrist bands, T-shirts or supporting any of the events, detailed on the Hope For Morgan Face book page. Thank you for you help.
