Kids Delighted with Bike Decorating Workshop!

Nearly 40 local children and teenagers took part in Saturday’s free bike decorating workshop at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

The event was one of over 50 cycling-related activities taking place throughout Bristol between 11th and 26th September as part of the Bristol Cycle Carnival season, in preparation for the carnival itself.

With a huge array of brightly coloured ribbons, fabric and sticky-back-plastic, local youngsters were inspired to spruce up their bicycles and scooters.

The workshop was led by a freelance artist, one of a pool of artists funded by Bristol City Council Neighbourhood Arts. She told Bradley Stoke Matters “It’s been really popular with the children, particularly with the girls who have loved adding pink ribbons to their bikes. Even some of the boys from the skate park who didn’t seem interested at first soon got involved when they realised they could add their initials to their scooters!”

13th to 17th September is South Gloucestershire’s official ‘Bike to School Week’, with local primary schools encouraging their pupils to cycle to school as many times as possible during the week. Meadowbrook Primary School will be hosting the Bike Doctor, who will be checking the children’s bikes. Pupils are also being invited to ‘Bling their bikes’ for a school parade during Golden Time on Friday 17th September.

Sunday 19th September will see the UK’s first dedicated Cycling Carnival, setting off from Queens Square at Midday! The route will be about 30 minutes long, weaving it’s way through the City centre, Broadmead, through Castle Park, and back to Queens Square for the Cycle Sessions festival featuring; pedal powered stage, workshops, food and bike performances. All ages and groups are welcome. See www.cyclefestival.com for full details.
