Local classical music group is looking for string players
November 25th, 2022
Do you play classical violin or viola and want a new playing opportunity? Stoke Gifford-based group The Gifford Ensemble is looking for string players to grow its membership and repertoire.
Formed in 2018, the Ensemble has formed a reputation for its friendly, accessible concerts, providing light music and – crucially – home-made cake to appreciative audiences. The COVID pandemic stopped performances but not play – the group still managed to put pieces together online, including a recording of Ronald Binge’s Elizabethan Serenade, made with each player recording their part at home with a click track.
Regular rehearsals finally resumed earlier this year and the Ensemble were delighted to present a cheerful summer concert featuring well-known pieces such as Handel’s Royal Fireworks and Fauré’s Pavane, as well as two new works composed by members of the group.
The group have now started planning their autumn programme, including a Christmas concert to feature a carol singalong and of course more cakes.
Now they are properly back to work, the Ensemble are looking for new members so that they can expand their repertoire. In particular they are looking for string players, especially violins and violas.
Rehearsals take place at 7.15pm on Sunday nights in the Trust Hall, North Road, Stoke Gifford BS34 8PE. Members pay £4 per rehearsal to cover venue hire costs, but the first trial rehearsal is free. There is a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and all players get involved with discussions about the music.
If you play violin or viola and you’re interested in joining, you can get in touch with the group via their Facebook page, their website (www.giffordensemble.uk) or by emailing
