Local Netball Tournament raises money in memory of Sarah
February 28th, 2014
Sarah Port was only 13 years old and a pupil at Bradley Stoke Community School when she contracted septicaemia during her family summer holiday last year and tragically died. Close friend and fellow netball player, Lucy Osborn wanted to do something to honour her memory whilst raising funds for charity.
Knowing how much Sarah loved to play netball, Lucy and her older sister Emily decided to organise a mixed netball tournament. The event took place on the 16th February and, despite it raining non-stop for the previous few weeks, it was a beautiful day as if it were summer.
More people than expected turned up for the tournament with 7 teams taking part, totalling 70 players, qualified umpires, many supporters including parents of some of the younger players, Sarah’s family and some Bradley Stoke PE teachers.
The atmosphere and enthusiasm shown was brilliant, especially by the men! It was entertaining watching 6”5 men marking girls of 12! There was free cups of squash and cakes donated by players and the owner of The Orchard (Toby Carvery).
A huge thank you to all the local business who donated raffle prizes – players and supporters donated chocolate
and bottles of wine, Reflections donated a free haircut, Excellence Spa donated a £10 gift voucher, Mrs Willows sweets (based in Willow Brooke Centre) donated a jar of sweets, Card Factory donated a Teddy, Tesco donated an Easter egg, Harvester donated a 2 course meal, Three Brookes donated a meal for 2 and a bottle of wine and Timpsons donated a gift voucher.
The money raised totalled £400 which went to Transplant Sport.
Lucy and Emily would like to say a big Thank you to all those that made the day lots of fun and a great success.
