Local Woman Swimming a Marathon for Meningitis
February 8th, 2013Bradley Stoke resident Linda Gregg aims to swim the equivalent of a Marathon tomorrow (Saturday 9th February) in Tockington Manor swimming Pool in aid of Meningitis Research Foundation.
Linda is no stranger to raising money for charity. In fact she makes the effort to do something every year. One year she arranged a Greek Night with her business partner at the Cafe she owns in Keynsham, Cafe Creme, and another a Cake Sale at Chipping Sodbury Victorian evening. Previous fundraisers have been for Cancer Research and money for the Blind. This year, Linda will swim for Meningitis which is the inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by many different organisms including bacteria and viruses.
Linda is a keen swimmer with Severnside Tritons. Her sister, who works at Tockington Manor (who have given Linda free use of the pool), will be counting the laps, and four girls from the nursery will be giving up their time to help out as Life Guards. Cafe Creme will be decorating the Cafe with purple balloons and there will be boxes put out for customers/locals to donate any money. Suppliers have donated hampers for raffles and the Cafe will be updating the Community on Linda s progress.
Chris Head, Chief Executive of Meningitis Research Foundation said: We are extremely grateful to Linda for taking on this marathon swimming challenge and other fundraising activities on our behalf this year. Meningitis and septicaemia are deadly diseases which can strike without warning, killing in hours. We rely on voluntary donations to fund our vital work into the prevention, detection and treatment of the diseases and support those affected, so every penny raised through this sponsored swim will make a huge difference to the charity.
