Pay-As-You-Feel Food Waste Café Opens in Bristol

Intercepted food wasteThe latest café in The Real Junk Food Project network arrived in Bristol this week, launching as The Bristol Skipchen.

Originating in Leeds, The Real Junk Food Project is an entirely volunteer run food waste campaign that aims to eliminate food waste by intercepting food that would have gone in the bin, and serving it to anyone and everyone on a pay-as-you-feel-basis. By operating on a pay-as-you-feel model the project ensures that everyone is welcome and anyone can be fed regardless of income.

Since its conception in December 2013, the Leeds café has fed more than 5000 people and intercepted over 15 tonnes of “waste” food. The Real Junk Food Project are on the NESTA’s Britain’s 50 New Radicals 2014 list, and Jamie Oliver will be featuring the project on a special food waste episode in 2015.

The Bristol Skipchen is serving intercepted waste food Mon-Fri 9-3pm from Oct 6th until December at the Crofter’s Rights, Stokes Croft.

Pop in, say hi, grab some grub, get busy in the kitchen or donate your surplus food.

Sam Joseph, Co-Director of the Real Junk Food Project says:

“Today went so well, we got to chat to loads of people and fed lots too! We have shown that our model works in Leeds and I hope Bristol brings something different to the mix. It is crazy that so many people are struggling to afford good food as we bin millions of tons of it a year. We are here to challenge the current system that has led to this absurd state of affairs. Let’s just hope we get a permanent venue sorted in time for Bristol 2015 European Green Capital.”

Bristol local: really excited its coming and exactly what our community needs.
