Road Safety Improvements Planned, Ahead of Petition Closing Date

Well ahead of the official closing date for the Bradley Stoke Way Road Safety Petition, South Gloucestershire Council have agreed to prepare road safety proposals which go a long way towards addressing the issues raised by the local residents’ petition.

Following the 2 serious accidents on Bradley Stoke Way this year and the subsequent local residents’ petition, which has already raised over 3,400 signatures, representatives of South Gloucestershire Council met with local headteachers and the police to discuss the safety of pedestrians crossing Bradley Stoke Way.

Following discussion, the Council agreed to prepare a proposal to add a second toucan crossing at the crossing point between the entrance to Savages Wood and the entrance to Bradley Stoke Way from Wheatfield Drive and to reduce the speed limit to 30 mph from just North of the crossing. Railings will be added at the side of the road to discourage people from crossing anywhere other than the two designated crossing areas. There will also be greater police presence in the area to check the speed of motorists as well as some reactive road signs reminding drivers to slow down. The Council announced that at the present time there are no plans to reduce the dual carriageway stretch of Bradley Stoke Way by Tesco to a single carriageway, but that they will review this once the other measures are in place.

Petition organiser, Lynda Cordukes, said “It is fantastic that South Glos Council are already planning on changes being made, even before we have officially handed in the petition. So far we have around 3400 signatures, and there are still more paper copies out in the community to collect.  Thanks so much for everyone’s hard work, it has been a fab success.”

South Gloucestershire Council are discussing their proposed plans at the Safer Stronger Meeting which is being held today  at 7pm at the Baileys Court Community centre.
