South Glos Sports Festival 15 (5)South Glos Sports Festival 15 (2)More than 1,000 youngsters enjoyed an Olympic style day out to celebrate South Gloucestershire Festival of Youth Sport.

The event is run by South Gloucestershire PE Association and is designed to give school children aged from five to eleven the chance to take part in a range of activities from tennis and tag rugby to basketball and seated volleyball.

Over 60 schools took part and the day started with an Olympic-style opening ceremony with each school representing a different country.

The event, held at the WISE Campus in Filton, was sponsored by Bristol Sport and Active Leisure with members from the Bristol Flyers professional basketball team and Bristol Academy Women s Football Club supporting on the day.  

Organiser Kim Hazeldine,  from  South Gloucestershire Schools PE Association, said: “We are in our fourteenth year now which shows how popular this event is.  Our aim is to inspire the children to take part in sport and to be the best they can be.”

Ben Beasley,  Director of Commercial Development  at Circadian Trust, which operates eight Active Leisure Centres across South Gloucestershire, said:   “We were pleased to support an event that encourages young people to become interested in different types of sport and adopt an active lifestyle at an early stage. ”
