Staff and students celebrate Black History Month
October 17th, 2013
October has seen staff and students at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College coming together to celebrate Black History Month.
This national celebration aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.
With activities running throughout the month the students have learnt the key facts about Black History Month. Learners have taken part in quizzes, with the winners receiving a £10 Cabot Circus shopping voucher and braiding and henna demonstrations have been on campus. Free food has also been on offer giving participants a taste of different cuisines around the world.
22 year old Dominic Adjei from Bradley Stoke said: The food was good and it is nice to find out about other cultures.
Sandra Hall, aged 18 from Henbury commented: I knew very little about BHM now I think it is very important.
Student Liaison Officer, John Douglas comments: The last three weeks have been very demanding but also very rewarding. I am very pleased with the amount of students and staff that came for the food days. The quiz days along with the film days have been well attended by students.
Today I will be judged by the content of my character is the theme that we are using for Black History Month. This is a time to remember. 2013 marked 50 years since the dream and things have changed for the better. We must not forget the past but look to the future.
