Stephen Merchant pays visit to to hospice which means so much to family

SM 1Bristol born actor, writer, director and comedian Stephen Merchant has made a rare visit to his hometown to spend time with family and pay a visit to the local hospice, which is held close to his heart.

During his visit to Bristol, Stephen met with patients and staff at St Peter s Hospice, which cared for his grandmother  during her final days.

Stephen, 40, who is famed for co-creating tv shows The Office, Extras and An Idiot Abroad with Ricky Gervais as well as his hit standup show Hello Ladies, is originally from Hanham and now splits his time between London and LA.

Speaking about his visit Stephen said: “I first learned of the work of St Peter s Hospice when my grandmother was cared for by the charity during her final days in 1995. The nurses provided such wonderful care to both her and the family that my mother has supported them ever since, fundraising and taking part in events like the Walk to Remember.

“It has been a great experience to come to the hospice and find out more about the work they have been doing. It is such a warm and loving place and the staff provide a vital service to families in Bristol going through a very difficult time. ”

Head of supporter relations at St Peter s Hospice, John Flanagan said: “Stephen s visit to the hospice was amazing for the staff and patients who were all big fans. His presence was a lovely boost and he spent time chatting to everyone and taking photos.  Visits like this are essential for not only raising patient morale but also spreading the word about important hospice care.

“It was great that Stephen was able to take the time out of his busy schedule to pay us a special visit here; it really means a lot. ”

As Bristol s only adult hospice, St Peter s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members.

All services are provided free of charge but this care costs around £18,630 a day. For around £14,000 of that, the hospice relies on gifts in wills, kind donations and funds generated by the hospice shops.
