“The Hive” Open Day 20th August 2015

the hiveA local not-for-profit organisation that helps people with learning disabilities is holding an Open Day on 20th August between 2 – 7pm to celebrate the exciting new phase of its work.

Liz Cooke, CEO of the Hive, said “This is a very exciting time for The Hive. We are a small local organisation established in 1968 by a group of parents of children with learning disabilities. The idea of this Open Day is to make more people aware of our centre and what we do to make a difference to the lives of many individuals ”

The Hive, (formerly Avon North Mencap) based in Two Mile Hill Road, Kingswood runs a drop-in centre where adults with learning disabilities can socialise, play games and take part in various activities.

Sean who attends the drop-in centre said “I come here every day to see my friends, play pool and enjoy the happy faces ”

Liz Cooke went on to say “ We consulted our members about our name change and they voted in favour of the change from Avon North Mencap to The Hive. This name better reflects the sense of belonging and the family atmosphere which we pride ourselves on. It s a busy time for us because, in addition to our drop-in, we are embarking on a new advocacy service.   This will complement the informal work we have previously provided. ”

Jo Parry Support Worker of a member say “The Hive has a friendly atmosphere and everyone, members and volunteers, are very supportive of one another. I like the fact that members have the choice of activities or are just able to sit and chat. ”

As a self funding organisation The Hive has a programme of fundraising events. Last month they held a successful rock climbing event where volunteers and members climbed the height of Snowdon raising just over £3000. This was the first time many of the members had the opportunity to take part in such an activity. Later in August a Pamper Evening is to take place and a Quiz Night to follow in September.

Liz Cooke stated ” We are always looking for volunteers to help in a number of ways, be it at our social drop-in, as fundraisers, a handyperson and also volunteers to help us provide our advocacy support. I would encourage anyone who is interested in supporting us in any capacity to contact us on 0117 9614372. ”
