Thornbury Choral Society Concert
February 28th, 2011From X-factor to after shave adverts, the dramatic opening and closing theme from Carl Orff s Carmina Burana, known as O Fortuna, is one of the most popular and well-known works in the choral repertoire. Now local concert goers will have the chance to hear a full performance of Carmina Burana at Thornbury Choral Society s Spring concert on Saturday 15th May.
Carmina Burana was composed by Carl Orff between 1935 and 1936 and is based on a series of medieval poems discovered in a Bavarian monastery. However, the poems are mostly of a secular nature celebrating everything from the wheel of life to the delights of drinking, gambling and dancing! The concert will be performed in a stunning arrangement using two pianos and percussion instruments and the choir will be complemented by the OCTAVES Junior Choir.
To contrast the bawdy style of Carmina Burana, the choir will also be performing Brahm s Liebeslieder Waltzer op.52 (Love Song Waltzs), a delightful, romantic collection of 8 short waltz-like songs celebrating the highs and lows of being in love.
The choir, led by conductor and musical director Steven Kings, will be joined by solo performers Zoe Maitland (soprano), Rob Waters (tenor) and Dan Robson (bass). The pianists will be Robin Baggs and James Drinkwater and percussion instruments will be provided by the ensemble Three Strange Angels.
